The band is working during football games. To achieve the highest level of performance, students and directors must maintain their focus during games and competitions. Chaperones help by reducing distractions and supervising or assisting the students as needed.
The student leadership is very strong in the CPHS band. The student leaders do a very good job of planning and executing a great number of the necessary details for games and competitions. The student leaders are also very good at helping the students "maintain their focus" (behave), and most of the time there is little need for chaperone intervention. If a chaperone sees something that does need to be addressed, however, a word or two to the student leader will usually take care of it. If a student leader is not available or not able to address the problem, the students all know they are to respond to a chaperone as if they are a director. Students are expected to respond to all chaperone instructions/requests that are not "unethical, immoral or illegal."
There are often many parents who volunteer to chaperone games and contests. You will not likely be able to chaperone every event you sign up for, but every effort will be made to spread the assignments out evenly.
Chaperone bus assignments are made separately from student bus assignments. You will probably not be on the same bus as your student.
New chaperones are paired with experienced chaperones.
The first game is more hectic, so only experienced chaperones are signed up.
Competitions are fairly stressful and busy, so only chaperones with previous game experience will be signed up.
Chaperones are responsible for their own meals before and during games and contests. Entrance to games is usually free, but be prepared to pay for entrance to competitions if needed.
A med kit complete with medication permission forms is assigned to a chaperone in the first bus (1 or A). Any medications given must be documented and checked against the permission sheet.
The band booster vice president is the position responsible for chaperone activities. If you have questions about upcoming assignments, duties, etc., contact a vice president.
Finally: Chaperoning is fun, but it does involve a good deal of work as well. The games and competitions can be physically demanding at times for chaperones. Just as the band must be focusing on their duties, so must chaperones.
