In the 2006-07 school year a Marching Charter Committee was formed to look at time commitment for marching band in Leander ISD. This committee was made up of high school head band directors, one high school principal, Fine Arts Director, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, Assistant Director of Student Support Services and at least two parents from each high school band program. The committee addressed concerns about the number of hours required of band students during marching season and effects those hours have on many areas of a student's life.
An outcome of this Charter Committee was to conduct a survey of parents to provide a more comprehensive feel for how the band community views marching band. The Hill Country News recently published an article about time commitment on the heels of the band's success at recent marching festivals. Believing the arts will continue as they always have in this community is presumptuous. I encourage you to make your voice heard. Your comments are welcome - positive and negative. The band staff is always looking to improve music education.
Following are the results of the survey
